In the pursuit of improved thermoelectric performance,
we fabricated a novel nanostructured material to realize a high-density
two-dimensional electron gas confined inside the subnano-thickness
of a SrTiO3 unit cell layer between two anatase-TiO2 barriers. This heterointerface (quantum well) system proved effective
in enhancing the thermoelectric Seebeck coefficient and the overall
figure of merit (ZT). The concept promises to expand the range
of choices for high-ZT materials, possibly reducing the use of
heavy metals and paving the way for practical devices for converting
heat into electric power.
