I have been at MIT since 1991 as a professor. My specializations are linguistics and the application of new media to education. I had the honor of serving as a visiting professor at Tokyo Tech's Global Scientific Information and Computing (GSIC) Center in the summer of 2007. That was my second stay at GSIC, where I had also been a visiting professor three years earlier.

My host at GSCI in 2007 was Professor Nobuyasu Makoshi, who, among his many duties, is in charge of Tokyo Tech's OpenCourseWare (OCW). OCW started at MIT in 2002, and I have been part of the project from the start, having served on the original committee that proposed OCW to the president of the university in 2000. Since then, I have helped to start OCW in a number of places, including Japan. Tokyo Tech is a founding member of the Japan OCW Consortium, and it has played a leading role both in JOCW and in the Global OCW Consortium, which now has nearly 200 universities worldwide.

I am grateful to Tokyo Tech for having twice provided me with a platform for furthering my work in OpenCourseWare. And I look forward to promoting mutually beneficial exchange among Tokyo Tech, MIT, and other universities.
