Naoto OHTAKE, Vice President for Research Promotion

Naoto Ohtake has been vice president for research promotion at Tokyo Tech since October 2015.

Ohtake earned his master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering in 1988 and 1992 respectively, both from Tokyo Tech. From 1989 to 2006, he was with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tokyo Tech, first as assistant professor, then as associate professor. During this period, he was also visiting associate professor at the University of Minnesota's Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1995 to 1996.

From 2006 to 2009, Ohtake served as associate professor at the Department of Materials, Physics, and Energy Engineering at Nagoya University. In 2009, he returned to Tokyo Tech as associate professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has been professor at Tokyo Tech since 2010, and served as advisor to the president from 2012 to 2015.

Ohtake's main field of interest is surface engineering and science, including chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition of hard carbon films and their application to industrial uses. He has been the project leader of "Carbon based films - Classification and designation" in ISO TC 107 since 2015.
