Tokyo Institute of Technology decided not to hold the graduation ceremony scheduled for 28th March. This decision was made on 17th March with condolences to those people directly affected by the disaster and with consideration of potential aftershocks, blackouts, or disruptions in the transport system. The following is the special message delivered by the President in place of the speech usually given at the ceremony.
March 28, 2011
On March 11, 2011, we experienced the largest earthquake in the history of Japan.
I would like to express my most sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones or been affected by this disaster.
In the aftermath of the quake we remain in a serious crisis?for instance, enduring rolling electricity blackouts. However, we must face and confront these challenges. At this time we all must contribute to help those who are suffering to recover their peaceful lives, by fully utilizing science and technology. Society needs your power and knowledge now more than ever.
Today 1,093 Bachelors', 1,537 Masters', 30 Professionals' and 220 Doctoral Degrees are being awarded.
I am so proud to send all of you who inherited the spirit of “Monotsukuri,” or technical ingenuity, out into the world from Tokyo Institute of Technology. I truly hope you will do your best as you begin your careers, continuing to educate yourselves and increase your knowledge for the safety and happiness of society. Let's work together and beat these challenges in front of us.
Tokyo Institute of Technology salutes your successful futures.
My best regards,
