Fall Entrance Ceremony 2016

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It is my great pleasure to hold the Tokyo Tech 2016 Fall Entrance Ceremony in the presence of executive faculty and staff members. I am delighted to express my sincere congratulations to all the students who have been accepted into our schools. Welcome to the Tokyo Tech community!

This fall, total enrollment is 401 students coming to us, with 212 entering the master's degree program, 16 entering the professional master's degree program, and 173 entering the doctoral degree program. Among you all, we welcome 289 foreign students from 33 countries. The ratio of foreign students who seek degrees at Tokyo Tech is currently about 12 to 13 percent of the total number of students. Tokyo Tech is top ranked with this figure among science and technology universities in Japan. In summer, we have a number of foreign students on various short-term student exchange programs, creating an additional international environment. The increasingly diverse and multicultural environment at Tokyo Tech will provide all of you with a truly unique experience. You will develop the ability to work as members of future international teams who solve complex problems affecting global society.

Fall Entrance Ceremony 2016

Tokyo Tech's history extends back over 135 years. Since its beginnings, Tokyo Tech has endeavored to cultivate ambitious students with strong scholastic abilities, the capacity to integrate diverse perspectives and approaches which provide real-world solutions, and the creative competence to become future pioneers in various fields of science and technology. I believe that all of you will put forth your best efforts as you begin moving towards future contributions to the world.

Tokyo Tech is swiftly moving forward with numerous changes. These efforts include improvement in the quality of our education system and enhancement of our research strengths. The Institute launched a new education system in April this year with new curricula, each of them with clear student learning outcomes and competences. All of you will take advantage of this new system.

Research enhancements require reforms in many aspects, including increased production of high-quality publications and international co-authorships. All of you here will engage in research under the supervision of our faculty members, many of whom conduct cutting-edge research in a wide range of science and engineering fields. I hope you fully enjoy the open Tokyo Tech research environment and make vivid contributions to the Institute's research output.

With all these changes taking place at the Institute, it is an optimal time to be here. We have set ambitious goals that will take education and research of Tokyo Tech to higher levels. As the finest science and technology university in Japan, Tokyo Tech will succeed. Let us move towards this success together!

In closing, I wish that all of you spend a successful student life here at Tokyo Tech. Take care of your health, be ambitious, and work hard toward your goal.

Once again, congratulations to you all.
