The Seal of Tokyo Institute of Technology was designed by Prof. Shinji HORI in 1948.
The white portion represents the Japanese character '
',
which is the first character of 'Engineering (
)
'. The black figure represents the Japanese character '
', which is
the first character of 'University (
) '. This figure also symbolizes a swallow,
which has long been esteemed as a bird of luck in Japan.
