About Tokyo Tech
Tokyo Tech embarked on an exciting journey as it launched its new education system in 2016. I am glad to see that the revitalized curriculum, which aims to encourage proactive learning, has already provided great motivation for so many students. While the Institute will continue to fine-tune the system, its fundamentals have now been laid and will be sustained. Current and prospective students, I urge you all to set your own educational goals, decide how best to develop your expertise and knowledge at the Institute, and consider what you can do for the benefit of society when you go into the workforce. Tokyo Tech is here to offer you continued educational support.
The Institute of Innovative Research (IIR) was also founded in 2016. IIR's new organizations — Research Laboratories, Research Centers, and Research Units — provide researchers with increased flexibility in choosing their research topics and putting together diverse, effective teams. Furthermore, IIR enhances the mobility of researchers, thereby promoting more joint research and co-authorships with international researchers.
Over the years, Tokyo Tech has cherished strong ties with industry. Most of the Institute's collaborative research, however, has been on an individual basis between faculty members and corporate researchers. Tokyo Tech has now laid out a framework to increase large-scale collaborative research with industry so that it is able to deliver more research findings with impact, findings which can be adopted to benefit society.
It should be noted that developing talented individuals is another important aspect in engagement with industry. To this end, the Institute established a transversal and flexible educational program, the progressive graduate minor, in cooperation with industry. In addition, the launch of a venture capital fund focused on investing in Tokyo Tech-related startup companies is in process through a partnership agreement. The Institute's engagement with industry will nurture more young entrepreneurs and professional talents.
To achieve an international competitive edge and advance diversity, Tokyo Tech carried through various reforms with support from MEXT's Top Global University Project. In order to keep the momentum of reform going, we need to strengthen the financial base of the Institute, as the changing circumstances surrounding Japanese national universities are not favorable. While keeping spending in line, the Institute will put a system in place to increase industry funding and appeal for contributions from alumni and other members of society. Tokyo Tech will further increase operational efficiency through strategic and expeditious infusion of funds.
In cooperation with industry and the community, Tokyo Tech continues to advance innovation. Students, faculty, and staff members, let us all embrace the challenge of going forward with Tokyo Tech's various reforms with spirit, enthusiasm, and confidence.
I would like to offer you my best wishes for the New Year and look forward to working with you in 2017.
