Research

Three renowned research hub projects have made significant progress.

Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI)

ELSI was launched after being selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as part of the Ministry's World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI). Its goal is to investigate the origins of the Earth, the processes of how initial life emerged, and how evolution occurred in the early Earth environment. A new interdisciplinary field, bioplanetology, has been created at ELSI as it continues to establish itself as an international research hub.

Tokodai Institute for Element Strategy (TIES)

In response to a shortage in rare earth metals and other rare elements, the MEXT Elements Science and Technology Project (Core Research Center Formation) was launched with the goal of developing innovative new materials which do not use rare elements. TIES was selected as the only program in the field of electronic materials.
