Study Abroad Safety

To ensure your safe stay abroad, in addition to purchasing overseas travel insurance, prepare for the unexpected by regularly gathering information about local circumstances at your destination, and making yourself aware of any potential security or safety issues.

Overseas Travel Insurance for Tokyo Tech Students

Overseas travel insurance designated by the Institute

Tokyo Tech requires its degree-program students who travel abroad for education or research purposes to purchase the overseas travel insurance designated by the Institute. Minimum coverage is for medical & rescuer’s expenses of at least 30 million yen and personal liability of 100 million yen; it is necessary in case of an incident, accident, or illness.
The cost of the insurance is your responsibility as a traveler, but the Institute has concluded a comprehensive contract with AIG General Insurance Company, Ltd., and the premiums are approximately 53% less expensive than the usual premiums. (If you travel abroad on Institute business overseas, the Institute will bear the cost of the insurance.)

In addition, by purchasing this insurance, you will automatically be enrolled in the risk and crisis management service provided by Japan IR&C Corporation. The Institute will bear the cost of the risk and crisis management service.

Cases for which purchase of Institute-designated overseas travel insurance is required

  • For study abroad as part of an educational program at the Institute
  • For study abroad through an overseas study program offered by the Institute (including those offered by departments)
  • For overseas travel for educational or research purposes other than the above cases (an overseas study program offered by other party, an overseas internship, an academic conference, etc.)

If you travel abroad without enrolling the Institute's designated overseas travel insurance, the Institute will not be able to confirm your safety in an emergency and may not be able to take appropriate measures. Purchase this insurance for the period starting from the date you leave home through the date you arrive back at home.
