How to receive the MEXT scholarship

MEXT scholarship students must make sure to sign and date the attendance check list every month in person in order to receive the scholarship.
The lists are in the Student Support Division at Ookayama Campus (1st floor in West 8 Building) and the Student Division in Suzukakedai Campus (1st floor in J1 Building).
If we cannot check the student's signature, we cannot pay the scholarship to them for any reason on that month.
We have two deadlines each month. If the students sign by the first deadline, they can receive the scholarship in the same month.

Extension of the period of the MEXT scholarship

When MEXT scholarship students intend to enter the upper course of study(Ex. from the Master's course to the Doctoral course), they can apply for the extension of the period of the MEXT scholarship. Applications for extension of the scholarship period are taken around every November.
However, please note that students who do not meet the GPA (grade point average) is required by MEXT* cannot apply for the extension and it is possible that even after applying, their extension will not be selected by MEXT.

(Note)

  • MEXT scholarship students who enrolled in Integrated Doctoral Education Program of the International Graduate Program in Tokyo Tech must apply for the extension when they proceed to the Doctoral course from the Master's course.
  • The students who enrolled in Tokyo Tech-Tsinghua University Joint Graduate Program and Career Development Program for Foreign Students from Asia cannot apply for the extension.
  • Research students who will arrive in October and intend to enter the upper course of study must apply for a scholarship extension the same year and be ready to enter the upper course of study the following April.
  • The MEXT GPA formula is ( (the total units above 80 point ×3) +(the total units of 70-79 points ×2) +(the total units of 60-69 points ×1)) ÷total units you registered.

Requirements of the extension are mentioned below.

1) In the case that research students or Japanese Intensive Course students go to the Graduate course;

They will not be allowed to enter the Graduate course, if they remain research students for a term (including the period of the Japanese Intensive Course) that exceeds 2 years.

(Ex) In the case of the MEXT scholarship students who enrolled as research students or Japanese Intensive Course students in April, 2016.

2) In the case that undergraduate students (except students who transferred enrollment from National Colleges of Technology) go to the Master's course or the Master's course students (except students who enrolled in Tokyo Tech from the Undergraduate course) go to the Doctoral course;

Students who do not meet the GPA is required by MEXT (the GPA 2.50 or above*) cannot apply for the extension.
*The required GPA is subject to change. Please refer to the latest information.

(Note1) Students who enrolled in Integrated Doctoral Education Program of International Graduate Program in Tokyo Tech also cannot apply for the extension if they do not meet the required GPA.
(Note2) Except for University Recommendation (International Graduate Program (A) ), there is a quota for MEXT recommendation for extension applicants. Your extension application may not be accepted even if your MEXT GPA is higher than the standard.

3) In the case that the Master's course students who enrolled in Tokyo Tech from the Undergraduate course go to the Doctoral course;

Students who do not meet the GPA is required by MEXT (the GPA 2.80 or above for the Master's course and the GPA 2.50 or above for the Undergraduate course*) cannot apply for the extension.
*The required MEXT GPA is subject to change. Please refer to the latest information.

(Note) Students who was selected as the MEXT scholarship student by Domestic selection when they were undergraduate course students cannot apply for the extension for doctoral course.


4) In the case that the Undergraduate students who transferred enrollment from the National Colleges of Technology go to the Master's course;

Students who do not meet the GPA is required by MEXT(the GPA 2.80 or above for the Undergraduate course and the GPA 2.50 or above for the National Colleges of Technology*) cannot apply for the extension.
*The required GPA is subject to change. Please refer to the latest information.

(Note) When students intend to the upper course of study, they need to submit their latest certificates of the graduation and academic transcripts with ohter application documents to the Admission Division. Please be sure to get these documents from the universities they graduated before application.


Return ticket from Japan after graduation

MEXT scholarship students who finish their scholarship tenure and return to their home country, will be issued an economy class air ticket, mandated by regulation, from Narita or Haneda International airport to the nearest international airport to their place of residence in their home country. The application form will be sent to their laboratory from the Student Support Division.
However, the return ticket will not be given under the following circumstances:

1)
in the case that they leave Japan temporarily for a vacation, to visit their home country or for other reasons
2)
in the case that they do not depart from Japan within the specified period
3)
in the case that they return home for personal reasons during the term of their scholarship
4)
in the case that they stay in Japan after graduation because they have found a job or for other reasons
5)
in the case that they receive travel expense assistance from an organization other than MEXT
6)
in the case that they violate the pledge

(Note)Aaccording to program, some students cannot apply for the return ticket.

Withdrawal of MEXT scholarship

If MEXT scholarship students withdraw their status because of leaving Tokyo Tech, the students and their academic supervisors must submit the required withdrawal documents to MEXT.
Please inform the Student Support Division in Ookayama Campus (1st floor in West 8 Building)at the time of withdrawal.

Certificate of MEXT scholarship students

MEXT scholarship students may be required to provide proof that they are MEXT scholarship students in certain instances, such as when extending the period of their student visa. In order to obtain a copy of the Certificate of MEXT Scholarship Student, they need to submit an application at the Student Support Division in Ookayama Campus (1st floor in West 8 Building) or the Student Division in Suzukakedai Campus (1st floor in J1 Building).
It takes about 3 working days to issue the certificate after the office receives the application.

The Use of the Proxy Seal System

There is a Proxy Seal System available to MEXT Scholarship Students who are not able to come to the Institute for a fixed period of time (e.g., due to internships).

Students who wish to use the Proxy Seal System are required to submit the Proxy Seal Application Form, Research Plan, and Certificate of Acceptance (from the institution accepting the student). The documents must then be approved by MEXT. Students who wish to apply for the Proxy Seal System are requested to consult the Student Support Division at least two months prior to your departure.

Others

In case that international students leave Japan temporarily because of an international conference or vacation, etc, they must make sure to fill out the Notification of Overseas Travel by a Foreign Student and submit this to the Student Support Division in Ookayama Campus (1st floor in West 8 Building) or the Student Division in Suzukakedai Campus (1st floor in J1 Building).
