Exemptions from Enrollment Fee and Tuition for Graduate Students

We have released exemptions from enrollment fee and tuition for graduate students for the 2024 Spring Semester. (March 1, 2024)

This webpage is about Exemptions from Enrollment Fee and Tuition for graduate students, mainly for international students.

If you apply for those exemptions, please read Enrollment Fee and Tuition Exemption Application Guide for Graduate Students thoroughly and check every part of your application documents carefully to make certain they are complete and correct.

Tokyo Tech also accepts applications from students affected by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

  • Since AY 2023, the application method for exemptions from the enrollment fee and tuition for graduate students has changed.
  • Please log in to the Tokyo Tech Portal and complete the application process through the Enrollment Fee & Tuition Exemption application system.
  • The "Enrollment Fee & Tuition Exemption" system will be available at the start of the application period.
  • Printed application documents will not be distributed. Visit the website to download the necessary documents for your application.
  • The decision on your application may differ from the decisions on your previous applications even if your family circumstances have not changed.
  • Whether you are in a master’s degree program or doctoral degree program, if your period of study at Tokyo Tech does not exceed the standard duration of study, the decision on your application for tuition exemption will be valid during that academic year and in principle you cannot apply for fall semester.

Application Process

The application process for ALL applicants consists of two steps:

1. STEP 1: Log in to the Tokyo Tech Portal, enter application information into the Enrollment Fee & Tuition Exemption application system, and upload the required documents.
2.
2. STEP 2: Submit the original hard copies of the specified documents by the deadline.
3.
For enrollment fees, the application for postponement of enrollment fee payment must be registered at the time of the enrollment procedure.

Application Period

All applicants are required to complete the process during the following period.
Applications will not be accepted after the application period regardless of the circumstances.

Application for the 2024 Spring semester exemption

STEP 1 : Register application information online

For current students: March 14 at 10:00 to March 27, 2024 at 23:59
(Japan Standard Time  Same as below)
For new students: April 4 at 10:00 to April 17, 2024 at 23:59

STEP 2 : Submit original documents

For all applicants: June 6 to June 19, 2024

The students who enter a doctoral program from master's or professional degree program or enroll master's or professional degree program from undergraduate program at Tokyo Tech, will be treated as new students. The application period is the same as that set for new students.

Regardless of whether the student applied for enrollment fee exemption or postponement of enrollment fee payment at the time of the enrollment procedure, they must complete the application again during the above period.

Please apply well in advance, as it will be crowded just before the deadline.

・Office hours for in-person submission: 10:15 to 16:15

・Submissions by postal mail must be postmarked by the last day of Submission of Documents period.

Application Documents

If you are a foreign national with one of the follwing statuses of residence, please read "日本国籍等授業料等免除申請要領” in Japanese web page.

The term "Special Permanent Resident" refers to a permanent resident provided for by the Special Act on the Immigration Control of, Inter Alia, Those Who Have Lost Japanese Nationality Pursuant to the Treaty of Peace with Japan (Act No. 71 of 1991)

System Application: STEP 1

Please log in to the Tokyo Tech Portal and apply through the “Enrollment Fee & Tuition Exemption” application system.

The "Enrollment Fee & Tuition Exemption" system will be available at the start of the application period.

Submission of documents: STEP 2

After uploading application documents in STEP 1, submit the original hard copies when necessary as specified in the application guide and the Enrollment Fee & Tuition Exemption application system. Keep the submission period set for STEP 2.

Documents can be submitted directly or sent by postal mail to the Student Support Division on your campus (not by campus mail). If you send the documents by postal mail, please use Japan Post’s registered mail or “Letter Pack Light” services to check their tracking service. Further information about sending documents by postal mail is in the Application Guide.
In case that you cannot enter Japan yet and cannot ask family members or laboratory associates in Japan to submit them on your behalf, please inform the Student Support Division on your campus of your situation by email.

Evaluation

Tokyo Tech will evaluate applicants’ academic performance, income, and assets according to our regulations. Please see FAQ below.

Application Results

Results will be notified on the Web System for Students at Late July to early August, 2024. They will also be sent to the applicant’s Tokyo Tech email address (@m.titech.ac.jp). A payment slip for tuition will be mailed to the applicant’s registered address in late July to early August.
(The enrollment fee must be paid separately through the electronic payment system “e-shiharai.net.”)

  • If you have applied, please do not make payment until you have been notified of the decision. If you do, your application will be withdrawn.
  • After having received a rejection or an exemption for half the amount, the enrollment fee and tuition must be paid promptly by the designated date.
  • Strong academic performance, etc. may have a favorable effect on applications for exemption.

FAQ

The basic information below about exemptions and postponement are also written in the above Application Guide.

Exemption from Enrollment Fee

In any of the following cases, half the enrollment fee can be waived on request following review of the application:

1.
A degree-seeking student who is unable to pay the enrollment fee due to financial difficulties but has demonstrated outstanding academic performance
2.
A degree-seeking student who is unable to pay the enrollment fee due to the death of his/her financial provider, or due to damage caused by a natural disaster, which occurred within a year prior to enrollment, from which a student or his/her financial provider is suffering
3.
A degree-seeking student whose circumstances are comparable with 1 or 2 above and whose reasons for exemption/payment postponement are approved by the president

Notwithstanding the above, international students entering Tokyo Tech in the 2024 spring semester will not be exempt from payment, although they may be eligible for payment postponement. (Those who were Tokyo Tech students in the 2023 fall semester can apply for exemption and/or postponement.)

Also, the following students are not permitted to apply for exemption or postponement.

1.
Government funded international students
2.
Privately funded international students who have been assigned by their government to a study abroad program

Postponement of Enrollment Fee Payment

Conditions for the exemption and application process are the same as in “Exemption from Enrollment Fee” (see above) when students who will pay the enrollment fee in full apply for postponement of payment. When postponement is approved, the enrollment fee must be paid by the end of August for students starting in April, and by the end of January for students starting in September.

Exemption from Tuition

In any of the following cases, the full amount or half the tuition can be waived on request following review of the application:

1.
A degree-seeking student who is unable to pay tuition due to financial difficulties but has demonstrated outstanding academic performance
2.
A degree-seeking student who is unable to pay tuition due to the death of his/her financial provider, or due to damage caused by a natural disaster that occurred within a year prior to enrollment as a new student, or six months prior to the deadline for tuition payment for current students, from which the student or his/her financial provider is suffering
3.
A degree-seeking student whose circumstances are comparable with 1 or 2 above and whose reasons for exemption/payment postponement are approved by the president

Notwithstanding the above, international students entering Tokyo Tech in the 2024 spring semester will not be exempt from payment, although they may be eligible for payment postponement. (Those who were Tokyo Tech students in the 2023 fall semester can apply for exemption and/or postponement.)

Also, the following students are not permitted to apply for exemption or postponement.

1.
Government funded international students
2.
Privately funded international students who have been assigned by their government to a study abroad programt

Postponement of the Tuition Payment

The conditions and application process are the same as in "Exemption from Tuition" (see above) when students who will pay tuition in full apply for postponement of payment. When postponement is approved, the tuition must be paid by the end of August for the spring semester, and by the end of January for the fall semester.
