FAQs about the MEXT Scholarship

Q1: How do I know if I qualify for a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship?

A1: The basic qualifications for a MEXT Scholarship are as follows:

Basic Qualifications apply to both Undergraduate and Graduate-level Students:

1) Nationality: Applicant must have the nationality of a country with which Japan has diplomatic relations. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application will not be eligible. <Embassy Recommendation> Stateless persons are also eligible.

2) Visa and Resident Status: Selected applicants must obtain a Student (ryuugaku 留学) visa. MEXT Scholarship Students must have the resident status of "Student" during their stay in Japan.

3) An applicant who falls into any or all of the following categories is not eligible.

  • Applicant was a grantee of a MEXT Scholarship in the past (unless the applicant has conducted research or taught for a minimum of three years between the completion of the first scholarship period and the start of the second scholarship period).
  • Applicant is already the recipient of a scholarship from an organization other than MEXT (including any governmental organization in the applicant's country of origin).
  • Applicant is concurrently applying for a MEXT Scholarship through another university; is applying for a MEXT Scholarship through a University Recommendation and Embassy Recommendation at the same time; or is applying for a scholarship organized by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).

Qualifications for Undergraduate Students

1) Age: Applicant must be 17 or older and younger than 22 on April 1 of the year of enrollment in a preparatory program for undergraduate students.

2) Academic Background: Applicant must have completed a 12-year school education or have graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan.
Note: Also included is Applicant who otherwise satisfies entrance eligibility for a Japanese university.

3) Japanese Language: Applicant must be willing to learn Japanese and receive a university education in Japanese.

Qualifications for Graduate-level Students

1) <University Recommendation> Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan prior to the enrollment period at Tokyo Tech.

2) Age: Applicant must be under the age of 35 on April 1 of the year of enrollment at Tokyo Tech.

3) Academic Background: Applicant must be a graduate of a Japanese university or have the academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate.
Note: Also included is Applicant who otherwise satisfies entrance eligibility for a Japanese university.

4) Japanese Language: <Embassy Recommendation> Applicant must be willing to learn Japanese, interested in Japan and enthusiastic about deepening the applicant's understanding of Japan after arriving.

Q2: How can I enroll at Tokyo Tech as a MEXT Scholarship Student?

A2: First, you should apply for one of the two categories of MEXT Scholarships: the Embassy Recommendation or the University Recommendation.

Embassy recommendation: You should apply to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country of nationality.

University Recommendation: You should directly apply to Tokyo Tech. Within this category, there are two subcategories: the Research Student Program and the International Graduate Program (A).
Note: Within the categories mentioned above (the Embassy Recommendation, the Research Student Program and the International Program (A)), you can only apply to one category/subcategory at a time.

Q3: How much is the monthly MEXT Scholarship allowance?

A3:
Undergraduate Students: 120,000 yen/month
Japanese Intensive Course Students and Research Students: 146,000 yen/month
Master's Program Students: 147,000 yen/month
Doctoral Program Students: 148,000 yen/month

(The actual amount is subject to change.)

In addition to the above allowance, each grantee will be provided with an economy class air ticket in accordance with MEXT regulations between the international airport closest to the student's place of residence in the student's country of nationality and Narita or Haneda International Airport. Additionally, application, admission and tuition fees shall be waived.

Q4: Can a privately funded international student become a MEXT Scholarship Student after enrollment at Tokyo Tech?

A4: There is a Domestic Recruitment for privately funded international students who wish to be selected for a MEXT Scholarship.

To apply for the Domestic Recruitment, the student should submit the "Application for the Privately Funded Scholarships" form to Tokyo Tech in September, prior to enrolling. For details, please refer to the this webpage.
