Outline: Mr. David Zoppetti, the author of "Ichigensan (The Newcomer)" (Love story between an international student and a blind Japanese woman in Kyoto, awarded the Subaru Literature Prize), "Tabi-Nikki/A Travel Diary" (the Japanese Essayist Club Prize), "Alegrias," will talk on his life in Japan since his arrival in 1986 and about his new book "Fuho-Aisaika" (An Illegal Spouse-loving Husband). He graduated from Doshisha University in 1990 and was hired as the first non-Japanese full-time employee of a Japanese TV network, TV Asahi.

Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology has led the 5 year project, Norden at Tokyo Tech (2009-2013). Our goal is to propose the solution how to apply the Nordic Model to Japanese society toward harmony between technology and human-society, based on the discussion through the project.
This year autumn, we will hold one week festival focused on Sweden, following Finland Week (2009) and Denmark Week (2010). In this festival, we will examine again different aspects of Swedish Society through lectures, symposiums and hands- on learnings. We welcome participants on various hands besides faculties and students of Tokyo Tech to share what we learn from Swedish Society. Also we expect that our festival would have any significance for Japanese rebuilding efforts after the 3.11 Disaster.

To commemorate 150 years of international exchange between the two countries, the Germany-Japan Chemistry Symposium will feature a lecture series entitled “Catalysis & Synthesis, Advanced Materials & Chemical Biology" at Tokyo Tech Front. Tokyo Tech’s Gender Equality Center presents an international symposium titled “Promoting Gender Equality in Science & Technology”. Renowned scholars will speak about efforts and measures for gender equality in their home countries, with a focus on the situations of and support available to female researchers in the field of science and engineering.

The outcome of Tokyo Tech’s three-year program “Leading and Promoting Program for Women Researchers in Science and Engineering (Leap)”, will also be reported. This program was adopted and funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as part of the “support programs for fostering female researchers” scheme.

TSUBAME2.0 inauguration and tour

The inaugural ceremony and a tour of TSUBAME2.0, the cloud based green supercomputer, were held on December 2nd at Tokyo Tech Front to celebrate the commencement of its operation on November 1st.

At the ceremony, President Kenichi IGA and Executive Vice President Tatsuo IZAWA gave addresses, which were followed by congratulatory speeches by Mr. Hayashi TOWATARI, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and by Dr. Hisatake OKADA, Executive and Vice President of Hokkaido University. Representatives from corporations(1) which cooperated on the development of TSUBAME2.0, also delivered speeches.

After a tape-cutting ceremony, Prof. Satoshi MATSUOKA of the Global Scientific Information and Computing Center (GSIC) presented an outline of TSUBAME2.0. Prof. Takayuki AOKI of GSIC and Prof. Yutaka AKIYAMA from the Department of Computer Science in the Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, introduced case studies. A TSUBAME2.0 video was shown and a tour was conducted after the ceremony.

“Photonics Integration-Core Electronics (PICE)”, one of the nine Global COE Programs at Tokyo Tech, will present “The International Workshop on Millimeter Wave Wireless Technology and Applications”. Renowned scholars in this field will be invited both from home and abroad including Dr. Roberto SORRENTINO of the University of Perugia (1993 recipient of the IEEE MTT-S Meritorious Service Award, former President of EuMA) and Dr. Duixian LIU of IBM’s Watson Research Center.

The workshop will provide an overview of state of the art millimeter wave wireless technologies and applications, in the areas of antennas, devices, components, circuits, signal processing and systems, with the aim of fostering exchange of ideas between academia and industry. The research outcome of the ongoing project “RF Coexisting Technology on High Speed Baseband IC for Millimeter Wave Radio Systems” will also be introduced by project members.

The objective of the project is to develop technologies useful for human society and to promote their utilization.

Following the Finland Week held in 2009, The Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology will organize a Denmark Week this year, which will include lectures, a symposium, exhibitions, a presentation and events to be held at various locations throughout Ookayama.

Title: “Plastic” Solar Cells: Self-Assembly of Bulk Heterojunction Nano-Materials by Spontaneous Phase Separation

Dr. Alan J. Heeger, 2000 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry and Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California at Santa Barbara, will speak about “plastic” solar cells which have recently drawn attention as candidates for low cost solar cells. By focusing on the self-assembly of bulk heterojunction nano-materials, he will introduce the current status and perspective of the research.

This is one in a series of “Creation of nanofiber innovation” lectures of the Department of organic and polymeric materials, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and is open to the public.

JAYSES(Japan-Asia Young Scientist and Engineer Study Visit) 2010 FinalReporting Session

　15 Tokyo Tech students visited Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh) from 19 to 28 Aug., jointly with 20 students from Vietnamese universities and 24 students from neighboring countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines).They made study visit to various types of organization such as JICA projects, Japanese factories, government organization and Vietnamese universities. They learned the influence to the Vietnam society and industry by Japanese ODA or private investment and to understand how the Japanese technology is applied and utilized to the practical situation in Vietnam.
　They will make presentation of the result of discussion among Asian students as "young scientists and engineers" how these countries related and affected each other in the past and also their outlook how the relation of Japan, Vietnam and ASEAN countries should be in the future. Tokyo Tech Festival and Open House at Ookayama

The annual Tokyo Tech festival will take place on Saturday, 23 and Sunday, 24 October, 2010, at the Ookayama campus. The festival, which is planned and organized by students, is open to the public. It offers various programs including talks, live music, indoor/outdoor exhibitions and performances, and even academic lectures and laboratory demonstrations. Food and refreshments are available at a range of vendors.

This year's theme is "PLUS-1".

The combination of a plus sign and the numerical symbol 1 is adopted as the official logo of the campus festival, Koudaisai. It expresses our strong willingness to enrich the festival by adding something ingenious to take this year’s festival to a new level.

Come and enjoy walking around the campus and taking part in activities on an autumn day.

During the festival, the university also organizes an information open house. It will showcase the education and research projects conducted at Tokyo Tech. Also, an information session for admission to undergraduate courses will be provided as follows.

"FP 7" (the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development) is the European Union's chief instrument for funding research over the period 2007 to 2013 in the European Union and 13 associated countries.

Part of FP7, the European Research Council (ERC) is the first European funding body set up to support investigator-driven frontier research. The ERC is a flagship component of the 'Ideas Programme' of EU FP7. ERC grants are awarded through open competition to projects headed by starting and established researchers, irrespective of their nationalities, who are working or moving to work in Europe - the sole criterion for selection is scientific excellence.

Prof. Nowotny, the President of ERC since 1st March 2010 will present the principles of this new funding organisation, and some of the early accomplishments in terms of calls and funding which are open to researchers from all over the world.
