Dr. Ekachai Leelarasmee, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Department
Chulalongkorn University, will report on the Electronics Engineering Camp for high school students provided primarily by the students of Chulalongkoron University in this seminar. The Camp has been implemented based on grants provided by IEEE, EGAT, and NECTEC for the last 10 years, in which students from fifty high schools have participated.

Simultaneous (English/Japanese) translation will be provided during the speech.

for Development of Human Resources and Research Network in Science and Technology

Overview:
Tokyo Institute of Technology offered a 1-year international postgraduates course from 1965 to 2002 and 2004 to 2006. This symposium aims to strengthen global partnerships among institutions and researchers of Tokyo Tech-UNESCO fellows and also enhance academic, governmental and industrial relationships. Tokyo Institute of Technology aims to qualify international relationships in light of achievements of the Tokyo Tech-UNESCO courses.

Aims:
Promoting partnerships among researchers is the key to develop effective international network of Tokyo Tech-UNESCO fellows.

1)To strengthen academic, governmental, industrial relationships among Tokyo Tech – UNESCO fellows and to strengthen human network by establishing the UNESCO Alumni Association in Tokyo Institute of Technology.

2)To plan future education program in collaboration with UNESCO (with the headquarters and regional offices) for sustainable development in globalization on the basis of past achievements in the UNESCO course.

Outline:
Good Student Support Program at Tokyo Institute of Technology has been actively engaged in various activities both within the campus and beyond since the program was adopted in 2007 as a part of the “Student Support Programs Responding to New Social Needs,” sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

In the first part of the present forum, a guest speaker will give a presentation entitled “An Approach of Good Student Support Program at Osaka University – Leadership Nurturing Program for Civil Society and Presidential Round for the Program,” followed by student presentations “Various Good Student Support Program Activities at Tokyo Institute of Technology,” given by the students who are actually involved in the activities.

President of the Institute and Vice President of a local primary school will serve as the commentators to conclude the forum.

Anybody interested is welcome (no preliminary application is needed and attendance is free of charge).

Wang Lixiong, a Chinese writer and intellectual, will talk on the reconstruction of Chinese literature and culture.

17 Tokyo Tech students visited Thailand from 19 to 29 Aug., joined with 22 students from 5 Thai universities (Chula, KMITL, KMUTT, SIIT and Kasetsart) and 12 students from 3 universities in Indonesia (UI, ITB, UGM) made study visit to various types of organization such as Japanese/Thai industries, government organization and Thai universities. They learned the influence to the Thai society and industry by Japanese ODA or private investment and to understand how the Japanese technology is applied and utilized to the practical situation in Thailand.

They will make presentation of the result of discussion among Asian students as "young scientists and engineers" how those countries related and affected each other in the past and also their outlook how the relation of Japan and Thailand should be in the future. (Future Vision of Asia)

Tokyo Tech Festival and Open House at Ookayama

The annual Tokyo Tech festival will take place on Saturday, 24 and Sunday, 25 October, 2009, on the Ookayama campus. The festival, planned and organized by students, is open to the public. It offers various programs including talks, live music, indoor/outdoor exhibitions and performances, and even academic lectures and laboratory demonstrations. Food and refreshments are available at vendors.

This year's theme is "(BE) COLORFUL," representing the concept of rich characters on the campus and its diversity.

Come and enjoy taking part in activities and walking around the campus on an autumn day.

During the festival, the university also organizes an informational open house. It will showcase the education and research projects conducted at Tokyo Tech. Also, information session for admission to undergraduate courses will be provided as follows.

GSIC (Global Scientific Information and Computing Center) holds an international workshop on computational fluid dynamics inviting professors and academic staff from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Various possibilities of the computational fluid dynamics study on the atomic energy research will be discussed.

Following the workshop, a session to introduce education and campus life at the Politecnico di Milano, will take place. The Politecnico di Milano and Tokyo Tech have strong relationship with a students exchange agreement concluded.

Nobel laureate to talk on chemistry

G-COE Program of “Education and Research Center for Emergence of New Molecular Chemistry” (Chem6 in short) organizes a seminar inviting Professor Robert H. Grubbs from the California Institute of Technology. Professor Grubbs received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2005 “for the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis.”

In his lecture, Professor Grubbs will talk about his dedication and enthusiasm for science, fun and joy of new discovery, and commitment to the betterment of society. It will be provided in English.

Undergraduate and graduate students and high-school students are welcome. Please take part in the wonderful opportunity to listen to the world’s prominent scientist!
