Nomination of University Presidential Candidate

The President Nomination Committee of Tokyo Institute of Technology has announced Prof. Ken Okazaki as its candidate for the next university president. Prof. Ken Okazaki is currently the dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and School of Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology.
The term of office of the new President will be four years from October 24, 2011 to October 23, 2015.

Drama Communication Workshop

This is a workshop for students who want to improve their presentation skills, build confidence, and learn how to effectually communicate their research to a wide variety of target audiences.
In this workshop, we will be looking at how influences from the world of the theatre and theatrical performance can be used to improve successful scientific communication.Together with trained actors and performers, we will investigate what it is that makes a presentation effective, engaging, and essential, working towards a small performance piece where what has been learnt can be put into practice. There is no restriction on school or year for students.

International engineering students view manufacturing processes through tours of factories

On the 28^th of June, thirteen international engineering students and two professors (Prof. J. S. Cross and Prof. Tom Hope) from Tokyo Tech visited the Nissan Yokohama Plant and KIRIN YOKOHAMA Beer Village in Yokohama. The tour, organized by Professor J.S. Cross for AOTULE (Asia-Oceania Top Univ. League on Engineering) and SERP (Summer Exchange Research Program) exchange students plus an international Tokyo Tech graduate student, was aimed at giving overseas engineering students the opportunity to experience industrial manufacturing processes at Japanese corporations first-hand.

Starting at Nissan Ltd, there were several fascinating displays for students to observe, including one about the history of Nissan and showrooms displaying Nissan’s intricate car engines and sleek model cars. The tour included a guided walk inside the actual manufacturing factory and production line for the Nissan’s famous MR Engine. Everyone was not only impressed with high-tech efficient robots but also with the environmental technology employed by Nissan to minimize waste. There was also a room full of innovative inventions and gadgets developed by Nissan’s employees to increase the ease and efficiency of production which the students and professors were able to see and even try out!

The tour at the Kirin Brewery was also very educational. It explained how Kirin beer is manufactured step-by-step starting from the raw ingredients (hop, malt and water) down to the packaging of the finished products. At the end, the students and professors also had the privilege of tasting a few of Kirin’s many refreshing products including its beers, teas, other non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.

Overall, the factory tour was a fantastic experience - enjoyable, enlightening and extremely fun!

New Library and Museum Opening Ceremony held on July 4

The opening ceremony of the new Tokyo Institute of Technology Library and Museum in Ookayama campus was held on July 4.
The new building houses the library and reading space in the basement. Study spaces used by the university’s students and staffs are provided on the second and third floor. Some of the electricity for the library is created by solar power which makes this building bright and highly-efficient in energy-saving.
Visitors are also welcome to read materials after registration.

The Museum has been established for the purpose of transmitting information widely to society. The Gottfried Wagener Prize 2010 Award Ceremony

The award ceremony for the German Innovation Award “Gottfried Wagener Prize 2010” was held at the Residence of the German Ambassador in Tokyo on 12 May 2011. The prize, inspired by the work of a German scientist Dr. Gottfried Wagener who has close connections with Japan, was established in 2008 by twelve technology-based German companies and the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan. The purpose of the prize is to support outstanding young Japanese scientists and promote industry and academic cooperation between Japan and Germany.

Professor Akira Ohtomo of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, won Second Place in the Gottfried Wagener Prize 2010. Earning Third Place awards in the competition were two scientists related to Tokyo Tech: Dr. Jun Takeuchi, who was the Tenure-Track Associate Professor of Global Edge Institute from 2007 through 2009; and Dr. Takashi Yatsui, who earned a Ph.D. in Engineering at the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering in 2000.

Ambassador Volker Stanzel of the Federal Republic of Germany opened the award ceremony with his inspirational remarks, followed by a celebratory speech from Mr. Manfred Hoffmann of the Delegate of German Industry and Commerce in Japan. Dr. Hiromitsu Muta, Tokyo Tech’s Executive Vice President for Finance, gave a commemorative talk entitled “Gottfried Wagener’s Contribution to Education and Innovation in Japan.”

Tsinghua University Celebrates 100 Years & Hosts Global Summit of University Presidents

Tsinghua University celebrated its centennial anniversary in April, 2011. Professor Ichiro Okura, Executive Vice President of Tokyo Institute of Technology, and university delegates attended the celebratory ceremony in Beijing, China. Since 1985, Tokyo Tech has maintained strong ties with Tsinghua University through its partnership agreements and various exchange programs, such as the Tokyo Tech-Tsinghua University Joint Graduate Program.

The Global Summit of University Presidents 2011 (GSUP) in conjunction with the centennial ceremony was held on 23 April. About 300 representatives of 130 universities from all over the world participated in this commemorative event. The morning session featured the inspired words of various speakers, including the State Councillor Madame Liu Yandong, the Minister of Education Professor Yuan Guiren, and university presidents representing the Tsinghua University, the University of California, Santa Barbara, the University of Oxford, the University of Cape Town, the University of Tokyo, the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Auckland.

The concurrent afternoon sessions delved into the current issues and challenges faced by today’s universities. These breakout discussions covered five topics including “University Governance” and “Trends in International Collaboration”. Professor Okura participated in an enlightening and multicultural discussion in the “Interdisciplinary Research Development” session chaired by the presidents of Delft University of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

At the closing of the Summit, a GSUP Consensus was announced.

In the Centennial Garden on the newly established campus, a tree planting ceremony was held in which each university representative planted a tree as a symbol of collaboration and friendship with Tsinghua University.

On 24 April, the ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the People. The lavish ceremony, with over a guest list of over 10,000 people, welcomed government officials, GSUP participants, Tsinghua University alumni, ambassadors, academic and industry officials. The Tsinghua President Gu Binglin‘s warm opening address preceded speeches by students and alumni. Peking University President and Yale University President presented kind congratulatory words for the one-hundred year achievements of Tsinghua University. The celebration drew to a close upon the ceremonial thoughts of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

On this occasion, to deepen mutual understanding, Tokyo Tech organized a joint meeting between ASPIRE (Asian Science and technology Pioneering Institutes of Research and Education) and the IDEA League. ASPIRE is a consortium of five leading universities of science and technology in Asia including Tsinghua University, and the IDEA League is a collaboration of five European universities. In attendance on behalf of Tokyo Tech were Professors Okura, Mihara (Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology), and Endo (University Management Center) along with the staff of International Affairs department. The constituencies (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Nanyang Technological University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Tokyo Tech from ASPIRE and Paris Institute of Technology, Delft University of Technology, RWTH Aachen University from IDEA) discussed ideas for future cooperation between the leagues.

(Japan - Asia Young Scientist and Engineer Study Visit 2011)

【Objectives】
Tokyo Tech students will visit Thailand and meet the students from the partner universities in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam for the purpose of learning how the Japanese technology and methodology contribute to the industries and give influence to the society in Thailand as well as neighboring countries.

【Program】
4 months program including 10 days visit to Thailand.

Ⅰ． Preparation (July-August)
Study about the organizations to visit, Thai culture and history, Thai language class. Visit organizations in Japan related to Japan-ASEAN cooperation. Study meeting (1 to 2 hours) will be held in class room of Tokyo Tech campus approximately 10 times in 2 months. (can be adjusted considering participants' availability)

Ⅱ． Study Visit (21 -30 Aug 2011)
1) Observation: Thai universities, research institutes, Japanese and local industries, JICA projects.
2) Discussion: Exchange opinion and share idea among students.
3) Presentation: Each group should make presentation.

Ⅲ．Reporting (September-October)
Final reporting session in Tokyo Tech campus and issue the final report.

【Trip period / Expense】
21 Aug. (Sun) - 30 Aug. 2011 (Tue) 9nights 10 days（tentative schedule）

All the travel expense should be paid by participants (about 120,000 JPY). However, we are planning to award financial support to all the student who fully participates the program (from the preparation to the reporting). The details will be announced by late May on JAYSES Official site.

[Attention: International students should be responsible for the matters regarding the stay permit and re-entrance permit of Japan and also tourist visa to Thailand, if necessary. Some students who are supported by scholarship may be under condition or limitation to trip abroad. You should check by yourself and agree with all the conditions caused by the participation of the program.]

1.Tuition Waiver
We have extended the period of the tuition waiver through the end of April. If you cannot submit the　application forms by the deadline, please do not hesitate to contact us.

2.Scholarships (for Japanese students)
Japanese students can apply for JASSO scholarships (emergency loans) for affected students, if necessary (both interest-free and interest-bearing loans). If you cannot obtain all documents requested, please contact us.

3.Dormitories
The university has kept some rooms available for affected students, so you can move in any time after completing the application procedure. Please be informed that the rent and utilities costs will be billed at the stated amount. The rent differs for each dormitory, so please contact us before submitting your application.

Message from the President to students

On March 11, we experienced one of the biggest earthquake disasters on record in Japan. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the many people who lost their lives in the earthquakes and tsunami. A great many people are still seeking refuge and are experiencing devastating hardships. I am concerned that some of you and your loved ones might have been affected by the disaster. To those who were afflicted, my thoughts are with you.

We have reached the difficult decision of calling off the AY2010 Graduation Ceremony and the AY2011 Entrance Ceremony, and postponing the 130th Anniversary Ceremony of the University scheduled for May 28. This decision is based on the judgement that, for the moment, we should refrain from holding events at which many people gather, due to problems arising from the current situation such as concern over aftershocks, disrupted transportation and cooperative efforts to save electricity. I appreciate your kindness in understanding our decision.

In April, new students will join us and the new school year will start. Classes will begin on April 6 and fifteen classes will be held in the first semester as scheduled. Tokyo Institute of Technology has taken various measures to allow students to focus on their studies. Therefore, please return to our campuses with a sense of security. As for new students, we will support you so that you can start your university life with confidence. Naturally, the University is maximizing its efforts to save electricity and we would like to ask all students for preparedness and cooperation.

I imagine that students from overseas are feeling a great deal of apprehension. We will endeavor to convey as accurate information as possible. In addition, individual consultation is available in administrative departments and at service centers, primarily the Student Support Division, the International Student Exchange Division and the International Student Center.

Things are changing every day. I would like to ask you to remain self-composed and not to be swayed by conflicting information. I also hope that you will consider what we can and should do as members of Tokyo Institute of Technology when we stand together against the hardship Japan is facing today.
