Rector of the University of Salamanca visits Tokyo Tech

Rector Daniel Hernández Ruipérez and Vice Rector of Internationalization María Angeles Serrano from the University of Salamanca, Spain, paid a call to President Yoshinao Mishima and Executive Vice President Toshio Maruyama on November 5. The meeting was attended by International Division Head Yuka Tsukada and Mr. Hiroyasu Yoshioka, Director of Asociación "Universidad de Salamanca" en Japón, who accompanied the guests.

Mishima opened the meeting with a brief overview of Tokyo Tech. He highlighted the education reform scheduled for April 2016 and described internationalization activities connected with Tokyo Tech's Top Global Project. In turn, Vice Rector Serrano introduced the University of Salamanca and described some of its research programs.

In addition, Serrano stated that the University of Salamanca influenced the establishment of many universities in Latin America. Consequently, the university enjoys strong bonds with its Latin American counterparts. Serrano also noted that the university's Spanish language programs are highly regarded internationally and bring about 10,000 international students a year to Salamanca for language instruction.

Rector Ruipérez proposed student and researcher exchanges as a vehicle for further collaboration with Tokyo Tech, commenting that he hoped to further expand the University of Salamanca's cooperation with Japanese universities.

Exchanging views

Located 200 km northwest of Madrid, the University of Salamanca was founded 800 years ago and is the oldest extant university in Spain. It is one of the oldest universities in Europe along with the universities of Bologna, Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge.
