2016 Spring Entrance Ceremonies

The 2016 Tokyo Tech Spring Entrance Ceremonies were held on April 4 at the Ookayama Campus. A ceremony for 1,135 bachelor's program students was held in the morning. Another ceremony for 1,545 master's and professional master's program students and 254 doctoral students took place in the afternoon. This spring, a total of 2,934 students enrolled at Tokyo Tech.

Both ceremonies began with the entrance of President Yoshinao Mishima, members of the Board, deans of the newly established six Schools, directors, and special guests while the Tokyo Tech Orchestra played a march under the direction of resident conductor Ryuichi Suenaga. All those present then joined the students' chorus group, Chor Kleines, in singing the Tokyo Tech Song.

In his speech to new bachelor's students, President Mishima highlighted the importance of maintaining a high level of motivation and embracing diversity to get the most out of the Tokyo Tech experience. In the afternoon, the president encouraged doctoral students to "openly experience both success and failure" while at Tokyo Tech. At both ceremonies, Mishima invited all students to take advantage of the flexibility that Tokyo Tech's new education system provides.

Mr. Yoshio Ishida, corporate auditor at Japan East Railway Company and president of the Tokyo Tech Alumni Association, and Mr. Seita Kanai, representative director and chairman of the board at Mazda Motor Corporation, also delivered speeches at both ceremonies.

After the introductions of the members of the Board, deans, directors, and special guests, student representatives made powerful statements about their new goals at Tokyo Tech.

The ceremony for bachelor's program students was followed by a commemorative concert. Each year, a professional pianist performs to wish new students good luck. This year's pianist was Mr. Shohei Tanaka, winner of the 2010 Novyi International Music Competition.

With its seasonal cherry blossoms in full bloom, the Ookayama Campus also radiated with the smiles of new students and their families on this special occasion.
