The 5th International Symposium and Seminar on Global Nuclear Human Resource Development for Safety, Security and Safeguards (3S) was held at Tokyo Tech from February 21 to March 3, 2016. This year, 177 participants including 26 lecturers and 47 invited students from Japan and abroad came together to share information and learn about the latest 3S developments.

In the first part of the event, highly renowned experts from Japan and overseas delivered lectures on safety-related themes. After the lectures, attending students visited a nuclear fuel facility operated by Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited and the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station managed by Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. to deepen their understanding of front-line organizations in the field of nuclear energy.

On their way back to Tokyo, students stopped at a park in Fukushima to participate in a mini-fieldwork exercise on radiation measurement. Collected data was brought back and compared to measurements taken on Tokyo Tech's Ookayama campus, giving students a chance to master measurement techniques and learn about the consequences of radioactive contamination caused by a major nuclear disaster.

Tokyo Tech continues to conduct the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Agent Cultivation Program in order to develop professionals who will serve as global nuclear energy leaders in industry, government, and academia.
