Modern Japanese Architecture: Second MOOC from TokyoTechX now available

The second MOOC from TokyoTechX, Modern Japanese Architecture: From Meiji Restoration to Today (ARCH101x)outer was launched on May 10, 2016.

Presented by Professor David B. Stewart, who has been teaching at Tokyo Tech since 1976, and several Tokyo Tech teaching assistants, ARCH101x offers a full portrait of the concepts and characteristics behind Japanese modern architecture in the past 150 years. Utilizing over 1,500 documentary photographs, the MOOC provides historical insight into modernism and post-modernism since the Edo and Meiji periods.

The penultimate week of the course focuses on house design by late architect and Tokyo Tech professor Kazuo Shinohara. The 6-week MOOC culminates in a unique introduction to the buildings on the Tokyo Tech Campus. These were also designed by the Institute's faculty members, many of whom are known as famous architects and structural engineers.

Tokyo Tech launched its first MOOC in September 2015, soon after it joined the edX consortium initiated by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Introduction to Deep Earth Science - Part 1outer, presented by Director Kei Hirose of the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) at Tokyo Tech, was an exploration of the Earth's interior over the course of four weeks.

Enrollment for Tokyo Tech's second MOOC is currently open. All those interested are strongly encouraged to join.
