The Tokyo Tech Ballroom Dance Club placed second in the group category of the 101st National and Public University DanceSport Championships on September 4.
Tokyo Tech's Daiju Sato and Noi Kimura from Sugino Fashion College won first prize in the International Latin Style rumba and cha-cha divisions for 1st-year students. Of the 22 Tokyo Tech Ballroom Dance Club couples participating in the championships, eight made the finals.
Placing second in the group category is the result of hard work during practice sessions. We also had winners in the individual categories. Our 3rd-year students have a pivotal role in instructing 1st-year members in the club. I am very glad that our new members delivered good results in the championships. We will keep practicing as there are many competitions scheduled after October.
DanceSport is competitive ballroom dancing where couples are evaluated by a panel of judges. The collegiate championships have two categories — international style Standard and Latin — each of which is comprised of four divisions. International Standard includes waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep, while International Latin consists of samba, cha-cha, rumba, and paso doble.
The Tokyo Tech Ballroom Dance Club is an official student club of the Institute, currently consisting of 25 Tokyo Tech students,12 Shirayuri University students, and 9 Sugino Fashion College students.
