The question of which discipline to focus on and master is by no means easy to answer for university students. All the more so for high school students who have not yet had proper education in even the basics of the various disciplinary fields.
To allow for this fact, Tokyo Tech has broadly partitioned the disciplines into seven academic groups, enabling admissions to be taken for each academic group. This way, first year students are able to study a wide range of subjects, backed by broad liberal arts and basic science courses, and progress to a more specialized education in the second year by joining one of the departments related to their academic group.
Students are therefore able to gain knowledge and experience in the first year to think meaningfully about their future path.
