Professor S. Yokota was awarded the Joseph Bramah Medal 2011 by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, for his outstanding contributions to fluid power research, particularly in the field of microhydraulic actuation and control.

Joseph Bramah (1748-1814) is a famous English inventor of the patent lock, the hydraulic press, and other inventions concerned with pumps.

The Bramah Medal is an annual award given for outstanding achievements which advance the science of Mechanical Engineering, particularly in the field of Hydraulics. This, it must be noted, is always against strong competition from overseas where Germany, USA, Austria and others have featured well over the years.
