The presentation ceremony for the Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates, who were selected in September 2013, was held at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) on January 7, 2014. Mr. Masaki Nagao, Managing Director of IP & Science Asia Pacific, Thomson Reuters, presented the certificates to the Frontier Research Center's Professors Hideo Hosono and Yoshinori Ohsumi.
The prize is conferred on scientists chosen from the top 0.1% of the most-cited researchers in each field in the Web of Science, Thomson Reuters' world-class academic research and citation database. Winners are decided by examining high-impact papers (the top 200 most-cited papers in each field) in categories thought to be watched closely by the Nobel Committee.
The prize is awarded in the same four fields as the Nobel Prize (Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, and Economic Sciences). Kyoto University's Professor Shinya Yamanaka, who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012, was selected for this prize in 2010. Professor Hosono was selected for Physics and Professor Ohsumi for Physiology or Medicine in 2013.
