Courtesy Call on President Mishima by Mr. L Gantumur, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Mongolia

President Yoshinao Mishima received a courtesy call from the Mongolian Minister of Education, Culture and Science (MECS) Mr. L. Gantumur and his delegation on February 5, 2015.

On the Tokyo Tech side, Professor Shinobu Yamaguchi of the Global Scientific Information and Computing Center (GSIC) and Professor Junichi Takada of the Department of International Development Engineering attended the meeting. In cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the two professors have been conducting development projects to implement new education standards for teachers and school principals in Mongolia. Professor Masahiko Hara of the Department of Electronic Chemistry, who is an affiliated faculty of ELSI, also attended the courtesy call.

President Mishima provided a brief introduction to Tokyo Tech, outlining the Education Reform, and then he explained the Top Global University Project funded by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to internationalize Japanese universities. Minister Gantumur described current issues in higher education in Mongolia and detailed Mongolia's efforts to promote international exchange. The Minister also sought President Mishima's support for efforts to increase the number of Mongolian students at universities in Japan.

Minister Gantumur and his delegates then met three Tokyo Tech exchange students from Mongolia at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI). Professor Motonori Hoshi provided an overview of ELSI, and Professor Hara led the delegation on a tour of his laboratory.
