A paper by Tokyo Tech Professor Hideki Koike at the Department of Computer Science, Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering and his co-author has received the Best Short Paper Award at the 6th Augmented Human International Conference held on March 9-11 in Singapore. Augmented Human focuses on scientific contributions made towards expanding human capabilities through technology.
This prize is awarded to one short paper chosen by the program committee out of 12 papers (eight pages) and 15 short papers (four pages) that have undergone peer review.
The title of the winning paper is LumoSpheres: Real-Time Tracking of Flying Objects and Image Projection for a Volumetric Display. As a fundamental technology in realizing volumetric display, the paper suggests using a predictive-model approach to solve the problem of delay when tracking flying objects in real time and projecting images onto these objects.
This is an ambitious project to bring the volumetric displays seen in science fiction movies into the real world. The research is still fundamental, but I am happy that it was valued to a certain extent at an international conference. I would like to further this research and make volumetric displays a reality.
