The ISHIN-DENSHIN ICT Center, a research center led by Tokyo Tech, has been selected as a research site for the Center of Innovation (COI) program.

The COI program provides intensive support for industry-academia collaborative teams that tackle fundamental, interdisciplinary R&D projects with both significant risks and high potential for commercial applications. The program is operated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency under the Center of Innovation Science and Technology-based Radical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program (COI STREAM), launched in 2013 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

With the support of participating corporations and local governments, the ISHIN-DENSHIN ICT Center started its trial activities for the COI program in November 2013. The center employed a backcasting approach to set an R&D plan for realizing ishin-denshin (heart-to-heart communication) through novel intelligent communication technology (ICT)–namely intelligent services and communications–for the greater happiness of all members of society.

R&D plans include "happiness sensors" that detect confusion arising from gaps in culture, language, customs, or generations as well as from fading memory, and wearable devices with ultra-low power consumption and energy harvesting functions. Based on these technologies, interactive concierge robots that provide intelligent communication services will be developed. Prototypes will be used for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
