The Closing Ceremony for the final TKT CAMPUS Asia & Tokyo Institute of Technology International Research Opportunities Program (TiROP) Summer Program was held at the Lecture Theatre on Ookayama Campus on August 21. A total of nine TKT CAMPUS Asia students representing China's Tsinghua University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and 19 TiROP students from seventeen partner universities in the US, Europe, and Asia participated in the Summer Program.
What made the Summer Program unique was that each participating student was assigned to a laboratory to undertake a research project under the supervision of a Tokyo Tech professor. They were also paired with a Tokyo Tech student to help them make a smooth transition to life in Japan. This gave students from both abroad and Tokyo Tech an opportunity to work and interact with each other on a personal level. Courses such as Advanced Technology in Emerging Fields and Survival Japanese, a special lecture, factory tours to companies such as Sony Corporation, and cross-cultural events including a rakugo performance provided students with insights into Japanese academia, industries, and culture
A total of 26 Summer Program participants attended the Closing Ceremony. In presentation sessions moderated by Tokyo Tech students, each TKT CAMPUS Asia and TiROP student shared a short presentation on his or her research project and general experience in Japan, and answered questions from the audience. Professors and Tokyo Tech students from the host laboratories attended the presentations.
At the end of the day, Professor Toshio Maruyama, executive vice president of Tokyo Tech, gave an inspiring closing speech, and Professor Kikuo Kishimoto, dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and TiROP project leader, awarded Certificates of Participation to the students.
