An important part of choosing a university is visiting its campus — the lecture halls, outdoor areas, and laboratories — so as to get a feel for the place. This year, Tokyo Tech held its annual Open Campus day on August 8. The slight break in the summer heat was timely, allowing the 15,000 visitors to fully enjoy themselves.
Open Campus has traditionally been held together with the Tokyo Tech Festival, but the events are now separate occasions. In addition to informing prospective students of the 7 academic groups at undergraduate level, this year's Open Campus also focused on introducing high school students to a new education system that will commence in April 2016.
Info sessions regarding Tokyo Tech's reforms and admissions briefings both attracted plenty of interest. Information on the renewed organizational structure, curricula, facilities, and other changes were explained at four separate sessions, all of which drew big crowds.
Among the various briefings held throughout the day, the academic group info sessions were very popular. Faculty and staff members were available to directly answer questions from students and parents about studying at Tokyo Tech and university life in general.
Lectures given on Open Campus day are an excellent way to experience Tokyo Tech firsthand, and are increasing in number and diversity each year. Once again, many visitors had trouble deciding what to attend.
The essence of Tokyo Tech's Open Campus is the opening of its laboratories. This year, 90 labs from all 7 academic groups opened their doors, allowing visitors to experience the true lab atmosphere and exchange ideas with professors and current students.
Every year, Tokyo Tech strives to make its Open Campus event more interesting, diverse, and informative. The Institute hopes that many of the young men and women at this year's event were inspired and motivated to learn more about their fields of interest.
