The first Suyama Challenge Award winners were acknowledged on July 21, 2016 in conjunction with the TAIST-Tokyo Tech (TAIST) graduation ceremony at the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), located within the Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand.
Initiated by Mr. Eizo Suyama, a 1952 alumnus of Tokyo Tech and an active TAIST supporter, the Suyama Challenge Project aims to inspire TAIST students to be aware of real-world problems, become socially responsible, and develop teamwork skills. Inter-program teams identify a problem and propose solutions to solve or mitigate it using creative ideas and technical knowledge.
Suyama Challenge Project 2016 was held on June 22 at NSTDA in Thailand Science Park. Mr. Suyama and professors from Tokyo Tech attended the event by teleconference from the Ookayama Campus. Four teams of students competed in the innovation contest, presenting prototypes such as an identification system of manipulated digital images, a "smart" auto accident alarm system, a wall-climbing robot, and a virtual archery system. The creators of the wall-climbing robot, which can be used to inspect and clean tall buildings, ships, and other large structures, were selected to receive the Award for Best Performance.
The virtual archery system creators were acknowledged with the Award for Best Efforts.
At the award ceremony — after a brief introduction to the Suyama Challenge Project — Tokyo Tech's Adjunct Professor Akinori Nishihara presented the Best Performance team with their award on Mr. Suyama's behalf. Guests acknowledged the winners with a big round of applause.
