From March 1 to 10, 2017, seven Tokyo Tech undergraduates participated in the Global Scientists and Engineers Course's short-term study abroad program in the Philippines.
Intended to spark Tokyo Tech students' interest in long-term study abroad opportunities later in their academic careers, the ten-day program led by Tokyo Tech Professor Jun-ichi Takada allowed participants to experience university lectures and interact with local students at De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila and at the University of Philippines.
In addition, through program-sponsored visits to the JICA Philippines Office, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and a JICA project site, Parañaque Sewage Treatment Plant, the Tokyo Tech students learned about efforts underway to reduce poverty, improve agricultural technology, and develop infrastructure in the Philippines. After learning about some of the challenges faced by the country, many participants commented that they hoped to contribute technology-based solutions to international development issues.
