Tokyo Tech and RWTH Aachen University held a joint workshop on material and chemical technology and life science on March 1 and 2, 2017 at RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of the largest research centers in Europe.

On the first day, RWTH Aachen's Professor Stefan Jockenhövel, Forschungszentrum Jülich's Professor Andreas Offenhäuser, and Tokyo Tech's Professor Masahiko Hara gave opening addresses on the aim of the workshop and the importance of strengthening relations between the three institutions. Each participating researcher then presented their current research, and discussions continued until the early evening. Tokyo Tech participants included Professor Junko Morikawa, Professor Toshiyuki Ikoma, Associate Professor Junji Hirota, and Professor Mitsuhiko Oi.

After lab visits and discussions on bio-interfaces and surface and interface science at RWTH Aachen on the morning of March 2, the group moved to Jülich, a town just northeast of Aachen, for more research introductions, lab visits, and debates. At the wrap-up session, the parties acknowledged the need for increased collaborative research, and agreed on a direction to take in the future.

Forschungszentrum Jülich is a public research institute operating under the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization.
