NSTDA's Thuvasethakul visits Tokyo Tech

Following up on the March 2018 establishment of Tokyo Tech ANNEX Bangkok, a delegation representing Thai partner institutions met with Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu on June 7 to discuss collaborative activities in Thailand.

Executive Vice President for Education Tetsuya Mizumoto, Vice President for International Affairs Hidetoshi Sekiguchi, and faculty members involved in Tokyo Tech-Thailand collaborations welcomed the delegation led by Dr. Chadamas Thuvasethakul, executive vice president of the Thailand National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).

The ten-member delegation included researchers from NSTDA and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), and faculty members from Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), including Tokyo Tech alumnus Dr. Thanaruk Theeramunkong (B.Eng '90, M.Eng '92, D.Eng '95).

Tokyo Tech has cooperated with NSTDA and leading Thai universities, including SIIT, to provide graduate education in Thailand through the Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (TAIST)-Tokyo Tech initiative. Now in its 11th year, TAIST-Tokyo Tech offers three master's degree programs in automotive engineering, information and communication technology for embedded systems, and sustainable energy and resources engineering, as well as a certificate program in rail transportation. Many graduates of the programs advance to doctoral studies at Tokyo Tech and other universities in Japan.

NSTDA's Thuvasethakul expressed appreciation for Tokyo Tech's efforts to develop human resources in Thailand, and shared an update on TAIST admissions for the 2018 academic year. The meeting attendees also exchanged ideas regarding TAIST activities, and discussed the increased demand for researchers to advance Thailand's social and economic development.

With the establishment of Tokyo Tech ANNEX Bangkok, Tokyo Tech aims to accelerate academia-industry collaboration with Thai partners and companies in Thailand.
