Fall Entrance Ceremony 2018

The Fall Entrance Ceremony for new Tokyo Tech students was held on September 26, 2018. A total of 466 new students representing 40 countries and regions joined the Institute, with two students entering bachelor's degree programs, 287 students beginning master's degree programs, 10 entering professional master's degree programs, and 167 students starting doctoral degree programs.

Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu began his opening address by congratulating the new members of the Institute for their achievements thus far, and by highlighting Tokyo Tech's tradition of technical ingenuity. He encouraged everyone to take advantage of a positive environment where students can explore cultural and academic diversity, and where each individual can grow “through the shared journeys of others.” Lastly, Masu urged the audience to pursue both answers and questions, engage the community, and transfer knowledge to one another in line with the Tokyo Tech 2030 statement.

After the introduction of the Board of Directors, deans, and other special guests, Dean Yuji Wada of the School of Materials and Chemical Technology spoke on behalf of the deans and directors. He invited all students to utilize technology and a deeper understanding of people and society to help solve some of the world's most pressing problems. Tokyo Tech Alumni Association Director Kiyoto Ido also warmly welcomed the new students, encouraging them to balance their technical expertise with the liberal arts while taking an interest in global industry.

To complete the ceremony, Department of Computer Science doctoral student Jan Wira Gotama Putra expressed his appreciation on behalf of all the new students. He reminded his fellow students to combine technical innovation with empathy and a deeper sense of humanity in order to contribute to a sustainable world.
