IAEA Deputy Director General Hayward speaks at Tokyo Tech

Deputy Director General Mary Alice Hayward of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) delivered a lecture entitled The IAEA: Introduction, Opportunity and Prospects for Nuclear Energy on January 22 on Ookayama Campus. In addition to providing an overview of IAEA and its key programs, Hayward focused on nuclear energy trends and projections for the future. She also presented information about working at IAEA.

The event began with welcoming remarks from Executive Vice President for Education Tetsuya Mizumoto. Thanks to the cooperative ties in fundamental nuclear education established by 19 universities in Japan, students from the University of Fukui, Waseda University, Hachinohe Institute of Technology, Nagaoka University of Technology, and Osaka Sangyo University also attended the lecture remotely. Over 70 students from all over Japan, many of whom are interested in working for international organizations such as the IAEA, participated. The Q&A session, which exceeded 50 minutes, included discussions on topics such as female employees at IAEA and the current seven-year work limit at the organization.

Hayward has held her current position since 2017. Prior to this, she was the vice president for strategy, government affairs and advocacy at Orano, known formerly as AREVA Inc. She also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy and Negotiations at the U.S. Department of State and Director for Counter Proliferation Strategy on the National Security Council at the White House.

After her lecture, Hayward joined President Kazuya Masu and other Tokyo Tech staff for lunch.
