Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (ToTAL) welcomes nine new students

The Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (ToTAL)outer has welcomed nine new graduate students — the second cohort of AY 2019 — into its ranks. A registration ceremony and orientation was held for the new students on Ookayama Campus on December 2.

Established in April 2018, ToTAL offers a five-year extracurricular program for graduate students. The academy's mission is to provide students with core expertise and the leadership skills to become a driving force in international society. The program is based on successful elements of the Program for Leading Graduate Schools and collaboration with the Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA), and empowers students in the science and technology fields to thrive and lead the future development of a sustainable society and economy.

During the registration ceremony for the new students, over half of whom are international and study abroad students, Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu highlighted the importance of the ToTAL program in Tokyo Tech's role as a Designated National University. He encouraged members of the new cohort to build strong relationships with fellow students and faculty members at ToTAL, absorb as much as possible, and enjoy themselves.

Following the president's remarks, Executive Vice President for Education Tetsuya Mizumoto gave a welcoming speech, as did Vice President for Teaching and Learning Jun-ichi Imura, the director of ToTAL, who introduced each ToTAL faculty member individually. To conclude the ceremony, Masu presented each student with a registration certificate, and each student gave a self-introductory speech about their research and goals while at ToTAL.

During the orientation session, faculty members explained the offerings of the ToTAL program, including the curriculum — recognition of social issues, global communication, leadership, followership and consensus building, off-campus project, and cultural skills — to the students.
