Manabu KANDA, Vice President for Teaching and Learning

Manabu Kanda became Tokyo Tech's vice president for teaching and learning in April 2022. He also serves concurrently as professor at the School of Environment and Society.

Before his current position, Kanda was senior aide to the executive vice president from April 2018 to March 2022, and associate dean at the School of Environment and Society from April 2020 to March 2022.

Kanda earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Tokyo Tech in 1987 and 1989 respectively. He accepted an assistant professor position at the Institute’s School of Engineering in 1991, and then completed his doctor of engineering degree at Tokyo Tech in 1992.

Kanda joined the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Yamanashi in 1993, working first as a lecturer and then an associate professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He moved to Tokyo Tech's Graduate School of Science and Engineering as associate professor in 1995.

After spending a year as visiting professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg in Germany from 1999 to 2000, Kanda returned to Tokyo Tech's Graduate School of Science and Engineering where he became professor in 2010. He also served concurrently as visiting professor at the Open University of Japan from 2011 to 2015.

Kanda was a member of the International Association of Urban Climate Board from 2005 to 2009.
