To introduce some of the exciting research that is taking place at Tokyo Tech, the Institute is holding a series of lectures, the “Tokyo Tech Inspiring Lecture Series.” The first event of this series will highlight the research of the newly established Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI). Four world-renowned scientists connected to ELSI will speak about their research on the origin and evolution of Earth and life.

Professor Jack W. Szostak
Known for his research in clarifying the functions of telomeres and for the RNA World hypothesis. Recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. Currently attempting to synthesize artificial cells to discover the origin of life on early Earth. Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University and Principal Investigator at ELSI.

Professor Dimitar Sasselov
Director of the Harvard Origins of Life Initiative. As an astronomer, he searches for Earth-life planets to understand the conditions in which life began on Earth and possibly elsewhere.
Professor Kei Hirose
Director of Earth-Life Science Institute. Was the first person to create the high-pressure and high-temperature of the Earth's core in a laboratory. Working on identifying the scenario for the origin and evolution of the Earth.
Professor Joseph L. Kirschvink
Professor of Geobiology at California Institute of Technology and Principal Investigator at ELSI. Famous for his coinage and work on Snowball Earth. A key person at ELSI in connecting research related to Earth and to life. Prominent person proposing panspermia or life on Earth as originating from Mars.
