We are pleased to inform you of the exciting workshop; "Design Thinking for Your Creative Practice", to be held in coming October and start of call for applications of the workshop. This workshop has been held every year since 2014 and got over-subscription every time. The workshop has a reputation for its effectiveness to understand the core of Design Thinking; concepts of Creative Confidence and User Centric. The workshop is also informative and enjoyable by its speedy Silicon Valley style process. We are inviting 3 tutors, who have long experience for teaching Design Thinking in d.school, Stanford University and other organizations.

It is essential for students to have capability of "leadership" and "entrepreneurship" in a borderless society in order to generate new values, and "Design Thinking" is a fundamental concept and methodology for such "leadership" and "entrepreneurship" skills. Many Japanese and international enterprises are actually asking their employees to learn and utilize the concept of "Design Thinking".

Facilitators for the workshop are Thomas Both, David Janka, and Scott Witthoft. They are all professional product designers and educators. They teach design thinking at the Stanford University d.school, the University of Texas at Austin, and at organizations around the world.

Although this workshop will be held as a part of Academy for Leadership's course of "Fundamental Group Work for Leadership I/II (F)", any students who are not applying to the Academy for Leadership course or students from other universities can also apply to the workshop. Companies yield remarkable power when they design the technologies that people use every day. Unfortunately, these tools are often designed in self-serving ways to encourage people to make dangerous choices. Scholars have studied these designs as "dark patterns" or "manipulative interfaces," but policymakers have struggled to clearly spell out when and why such designs go too far. It's not always clear when dark patterns cause a concrete, legal harm. One possible solution is to focus on the relationships of trust between people and companies. At base, dark patterns are not just harmful; they are disloyal to the people who trust companies with their data and online experiences. This talk will explore the concept of disloyal design and how it might be implemented in policy and practice to better protect people against dark patterns and make companies more trustworthy.

Mr. BENTO MASSAHIKO KOIKE is the founder of EVERON Co., Ltd., and the company's CKO (Chief Knowledge Officer): Together with Professor Hayashi, he aims to develop graphene supercapacitors with high environmental friendliness and power storage performance, contributing to sustainable social development. He also started Tecsis, a startup in Brazil that produced wind power blades, and grew it into a large international company with 7,500 employees.
(Tecsis growth strategy was also featured in Harvard Business Review as a case study)

Why did he choose to take on the new challenge of starting a business in Japan and teaming up with Professor Hayashi? We will have a conversation with Tomohiro Hayashi about the mindset of an entrepreneur and the key points for Japanese startups to compete on the global stage.

People hold attitudes towards a magnitude of things: Fast food, fashion, fitness, climate change, you name it. Thus, they also hold attitudes towards novel technologies, such as robots. Meta-analytic work has pointed out that attitudes towards robots are allegedly neutral or even fairly positive. Is that really the case? In fact, recent research from our lab has shown that people in fact hold ambivalent attitudes towards robots. We will thus explore the notion of ambivalence in attitudes towards robots to shed light on how to assess people's "real" attitudes towards social robots.

We at Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (ToTAL) are honored to invite Mr. Motohide Yoshikawa to speak on the topic "My Life as a Diplomat: 1974-2016" on Wednesday, December 13, for the 7th Global Leadership Café lecture series.

He will speak in English and take questions in both English and Japanese during the Q&A session after his talk. Participants may attend either in person or online.

Mr. Yoshikawa has 42 years' experience as a diplomat and served as Ambassador of Japan in multiple countries before appointed as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the OECD, and later, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations. Currently, he has retired from the diplomatic service and teaches international relations and diplomacy as Distinguished Professor at his Alma Mater, International Christian University (ICU).

He will share his experiences of his long-time career working internationally with world leaders, and his thoughts on leadership in the global environment.

Three lecturers, who have taught students at Stanford University/d.school in the United States, the home of Design Thinking, will be invited to Tokyo Tech and will introduce the concepts of Creative Confidence and User Centric, which are the essence of "Design Thinking" by holding a workshop of "Design Thinking For Your Creative Practice" in Tokyo Tech with a Silicon Valley-style; speedy and keeps participants entertained, over 2 days, December 2 and December 3.

• Tokyo Tech M1: This course is a must do if you want to learn in a fun cooperative environment. The lecturers are super friendly and professional!
• Tokyo Tech M2: It was a really fun, relaxing and interactive workshop. The workshop is very well organized and it allows the participants to learn very effectively.
• Tokyo Tech D1: This workshop encourages engineers/scientist to be uncomfortable because we learn and view things from totally new and unstandardized perspective: design, where numbers and formula are replaced by circles and shades.

• All of the Tokyo Tech students are expected to develop and execute new value for society when they become "professionals" in any fields. At ToTAL, we believe that the core of "leadership" is the motivation and skills to develop such new value for society proactively.
• The concept of "Creative Confidence", meaning that creativity is for everybody and anyone can generate new ideas, and "User Centric", which is making new values to be accepted in society, are the fundamentals of Design Thinking. Establishing such concepts in your mind, developing logic and taking actions will lead to such new values.
• Although it is often understood that Design Thinking is a kind of method to generate "innovations" by following 5 steps; empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test, the core of Design Thinking is the 2 concepts above.
• This workshop aims to establish such 2 concepts in your brain and body. D.school tutors designed the agenda especially for Tokyo Tech to satisfy such aim, which is deferent from usual design thinking workshop of merely learning the 5 steps.
• During this 3-day workshop, students should try to understand and experience the mind-set of Creative Confidence and the skill set of User Centric; exploring mechanism of needs and jump belong logic, through d.school way of speedy, friendly and diversified learning environment.

While many innovations and successes have been created by research originating in academia around the world, many challenges still remain in Japan. Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) will address this challenge and drive innovation through the construction of an academia-centered innovation ecosystem that connects various groundbreaking research seeds and businesses. TTOP is one of the Tokyo Tech's largest industry-academia collaboration events that considers such next-generation industry-academia collaboration platforms. We have adopted "Diversity 3.0" as this year's theme. This signifies the importance of breaking free from our unconscious biases to successfully drive innovation. We aspire to communicate this message through various activities during the event, and also provide opportunities to share information and exchange opinions to build an innovation ecosystem through the first real-setting event in three years.
