Tokyo Tech University Co-op cafeterias have been offering a Halal Recommended Menu since 2010 in the Ookayama Campus and since 2011 in the Suzukakedai Campus. Efforts to provide the Halal Recommended Menu emerged from the strong desire of Tokyo Tech University Co-op to enable Muslim students to enjoy their meals while following various restrictions.
The tasting event was held on October 22 at Ookayama Campus' First Cafeteria and on November 6 at the Co-op Cafeteria in Suzukakedai Campus with an attendance of around 20 students in each session. This time Japanese traditional noodle dishes, Udon and Soba were provided. Making the soup for these dishes without using Japanese popular seasonings, such as Soy sauce, Sake and Mirin, which contains alcohol, was a big challenge. However, to answer to Muslim students' requests, Tokyo Tech University Co-op managed to make a soup fitting with the strict terms.
At the tasting event, "Halal Beef Udon/Soba" and "Halal Chicken Udon/Soba" was served, and students said they especially enjoyed the salty-sweet seasoned beef on the noodles.
These dishes are now available at Ookayama Campus Second Cafeteria and at the Co-op Cafeteria in Suzukakedai Campus.
