Tokyo Tech launches new MOOC on science and engineering ethics

Tokyo Tech's new edX1 MOOC,2 "Science and Engineering Ethics 科学技術倫理," featuring video lectures by Professor Jun Fudano from the Institute for Liberal Arts and discussions with a graduate teaching assistant, starts on June 28, 2017. Covering both traditional and aspirational ethics in science and engineering to improve human well-being, this course is the first edX MOOC on ethics taught entirely in Japanese. The MOOC covers topics such as:

  • The social and environmental impact of engineering on society

  • Aspirational ethics and preventive ethics

  • Values which scientists and engineers share

  • Responsible conduct of research

  • Methods for ethical decision-making

  • Case analysis skills

Tokyo Tech launches new MOOC on science and engineering ethics

This course has six sections containing video lectures, discussion activities, and assessments including peer review. Lecture video transcripts and slides are available in both Japanese and English. The course was created mainly for university students, but is suitable for all those who are keen to answer the following questions:

  • How can scientists and engineers solve problems to make the world a better place?

  • How should scientists and engineers make ethical decisions?

  • How can scientists and engineers improve the quality of life and contribute to the well-being of the public?

This course was prepared for Japanese speakers and those who are interested in learning academic Japanese used in the social sciences, humanities, and engineering. Enroll now and join learners from around the world to find out how you can contribute to creating a society where well-being is a priority.
