The Fall Entrance Ceremony for new Tokyo Tech students was held on September 22, 2017. A total of 420 new students representing 39 countries and regions joined the Institute, with 257 students beginning master's degree programs, 12 entering professional master's degree programs, and 151 students starting doctoral degree programs.
In his opening address, Tokyo Tech President Yoshinao Mishima welcomed the new students to an "increasingly diverse and multicultural community" which would provide all with a unique study experience. He encouraged students to pursue unconventional ideas and approaches, engage each other and the community, and transfer the knowledge they acquire to benefit the lives of others.
After the introduction of the Board of Directors, deans, and other special guests, Dean Nobuyuki Iwatsuki of the School of Engineering spoke on behalf of the deans and directors, urging all students to utilize science and technology to advance civilization. Tokyo Tech Alumni Association Director Kiyoto Ido also warmly welcomed the new Tokyo Tech community members, asking them to harness the networks they create and knowledge they acquire to contribute to economic growth.
To complete the ceremony, Department of Materials Science and Engineering doctoral student Retno Miranti expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome ceremony on behalf of all the new students. She highlighted the importance of community and the building of stronger international relations in an increasingly tense global atmosphere, and expressed pride in working with science and technology as a means to solve some of world’s most urgent problems.
