On October 3, 2017, Tokyo Tech received two visitors from Lyon, France – Professor Michel Lussault, president of the Lyon Urban School (LUS) and former president of the University of Lyon, and Dr. Jan Matas, director of International Relations at the University of Lyon. They met with President Yoshinao Mishima and faculty members of the School of Environment and Society.
The University of Lyon is a consortium of higher education and research institutions located within the neighboring cities of Lyon and Saint-Étienne. It was established in 2007 with the aim of strengthening the quality of higher education, and it currently heads LUS, a new research project. The goal of LUS is to transform the relationship between education, research, and action in order to address societal challenges linked to the "generalization of urbanization" and global change.

The purpose of Lussault's visit was to explore collaboration possibilities with Tokyo Tech in terms of urbanization and urban planning, a field studied closely at the Institute's School of Environment and Society. The School offers programs aiming to solve interdisciplinary issues, which are generated by significant changes in global and city environments as well as shifts in the social climate. The School Dean Kikuo Kishimoto and Professors Koichi Yasuda, Yasuo Asakura and Norihiro Nakai also attended the meeting to exchange views with the French visitors.
