The 2018 Tokyo Tech Spring Entrance Ceremonies were held on April 3 at the Ookayama Campus. A ceremony for 1,139 bachelor's program students was held in the morning. Another ceremony for 1,667 master's students, 30 professional master's program students, and 242 doctoral students took place in the afternoon. This spring, a total of 3,078 students enrolled at Tokyo Tech.
Both the morning and afternoon ceremonies began with the entrance of newly appointed President Kazuya Masu, members of the Board, deans of Tokyo Tech's six Schools, directors, and special guests while the Tokyo Tech Orchestra played a march directed by resident conductor Ryuichi Suenaga. All those present then joined Chor Kleines, the students' chorus group, in singing the Tokyo Tech Song.

President Masu began his congratulatory speeches by welcoming the new students and their families to the Tokyo Tech community. He encouraged the bachelor-level students to "view even the toughest of challenges as beneficial," and to embrace the Institute's diversity in order to grow "through the shared journeys of others." In the afternoon, the president pointed out to master's and doctoral students that the increased autonomy they now enjoyed was accompanied by a heightened demand for leadership, and that they would have ample opportunities to take the initiative and create impact.
Mr. Yoshio Ishida, corporate auditor at Japan East Railway Company and president of the Tokyo Tech Alumni Association, and Mr. Junji Tsuda, representative director and chairman of the board at Yaskawa Electric Corporation, also provided words of encouragement at both ceremonies.

After the introductions of the members of the Board, deans, directors, and special guests, student representatives made powerful statements about their new goals at Tokyo Tech.

Commemorative concert
A commemorative concert followed the ceremony for bachelor-level students. Each year, a professional pianist performs to wish new students good luck at the beginning of their Tokyo Tech journey. This year's pianist was Ms. Yurina Tetsu, a doctoral student of the Tokyo University of the Arts.
The atmosphere at Ookayama Campus was once again a joyous one as new students and their families celebrated this special occasion under sunny skies.
