U-ATOM receives AESJ prize for promoting peaceful use of nuclear energy

Tokyo Tech's Global Human Resource Development Program for Nuclear Safety and Security was selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as an "only-one" program for leading graduate schools in academic year 2011.

Dedicated to avoiding a global nuclear crisis — be that a threat to lifelines from nuclear proliferation, nuclear terrorism, a large-scale nuclear accident, or a radiation-exposure emergency — the program continues to develop professionals who can serve as international leaders in nuclear-related fields involving academia, industry, or government, and who possess a high level of knowledge and outstanding negotiation abilities in the field of safety, security, and safeguards.

Our educational philosophy aims to cultivate highly specialized "leaders with a strong vision to contribute to the people, the public, and the world" through active societal and international engagement, an affinity for humanity, and a broad perspective of the changing times.

Students selected for the program join the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Dojo, held at the Tokyo International Exchange Center, where they can openly hold discussions and develop their leadership skills with fellow students and faculty members who live on site.

These future leaders in the field of nuclear energy also study international politics and law, economics, philosophy, history, culture, the arts, and modern languages to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the world around them. Volunteer work at disaster areas and domestic and overseas internships are also important components of the program.

This recognition from AESJ follows the Engineering Education Award granted to the academy in August 2014 by the Japanese Society for Engineering Education. I am honored to represent all the U-ATOM members who have worked together to make this program a success, and would like to thank everyone who has supported us thus far.
