The Tokyo Tech Ballroom Dance Club placed second in the group category of the 105th National and Public University DanceSport Championships held at Hitotsubashi University's Kodaira International Campus on September 2.
A total of 15 universities and colleges joined competition. Of the 29 Tokyo Tech Ballroom Dance Club couples participating in the championships, 15 received prizes while 10 advanced to the finals.
Many participants in this competition were 1st-year students, and I am very pleased that Dance Club couples performed so well. I will continue encouraging the club to practice hard so our good form continues in future competitions.
Ishii is a 3rd-year student in the Department of Mathematical and Computing Science. He is looking into how he can combine this discipline with DanceSport.
DanceSport is competitive ballroom dancing where couples are evaluated by a panel of judges. Collegiate championships have three main categories — International Style Standard and Latin, and formation dance. International Standard includes waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep, during which couples traditionally dance in closed positions. International Latin consists of samba, cha-cha, rumba, and paso doble, and often involves men and women dancing in more open positions. Formation dance* is a choreographed team dance consisting of a medley of between two and four International Style dances, which involves four to eight couples.
The Tokyo Tech Ballroom Dance Club is an official student club of the Institute, currently consisting of 26 Tokyo Tech students, 17 Shirayuri University students, and 7 Sugino Fashion College students.
