Fall Entrance Ceremony 2019

The Fall Entrance Ceremony for new Tokyo Tech students was held on September 25, 2019. A total of 503 new students representing 46 countries and regions joined the Institute, with 2 students entering bachelor's degree programs, 321 students beginning master's degree programs, 12 entering professional master's degree programs, and 168 students starting doctoral degree programs.

Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu began his opening address by congratulating the new members of the Institute for their achievements thus far, and then highlighted the high number of international students joining Tokyo Tech. Masu proceeded to share with everyone the Tokyo Tech Commitments — three guiding principles intended to enhance each individual's Tokyo Tech experience.

After the introduction of the members of the Board, deans, and other special guests, Dean Haruo Yokota of the School of Computing spoke on behalf of the deans and directors. While encouraging the new students to nurture their dreams and continue the evolution of science and technology, Yokota urged his audience to develop into ethically responsible experts in their chosen fields.

Mr. Kiyoto Ido, executive director of the Tokyo Tech Alumni Association, also provided congratulatory words. Ido encouraged the students to take interest in industry, supplement their specializations with a sound knowledge of the liberal arts, and take an active role in global networks.

To complete the ceremony, Department of Life Science and Technology doctoral student Sylvia Han Yun Leo gave a short speech on behalf of all the new students. Leo revealed her excitement at having a front-row seat to observe how technology will support the 2020 Olympics, and the opportunity to learn more about the impact of science and technology on a global scale.
