The Indonesian Student Association of Tokyo Tech, supported by the Institute and the Embassy of the Republic Indonesia in Tokyo, held the 10th Tokyo Tech-Indonesia Commitment Awards (TICA) on October 5. TICA began a decade ago as a joint seminar between Indonesian students who wanted to share their technical and scientific knowledge, but has since developed into an annual scientific paper competition for undergraduate students in Indonesia.

The theme of TICA 2019 was "Youth Innovation and Collaboration towards Indonesia's Golden Year." This golden year refers to a time period when Indonesia will experience a demographic dividend — a phase when the number of people within the productive age bracket exceeds the number of elderly people and children. The peak of this phase is projected to occur in Indonesia between 2025 and 2035. One aim of the Indonesian Student Association at Tokyo Tech is to contribute to the improvement of human resource quality through TICA as Indonesia prepares for this peak.

The number of participants joining TICA is increasing every year. In 2019, five outstanding students were invited to Japan from Indonesia to present their research in the grand final. The event started with greetings from the representatives of the TICA Executive Committee, representatives of the Indonesia Embassy, and Associate Professor Yuriko Sato from Tokyo Tech's School of Environment and Society.

The event continued with outstanding presentations by all the finalists. The judges' panel included Tokyo Tech graduate Ajeng Pramono and postdoctoral researcher Srikandi Novianti, RIKEN researcher and Tokyo Tech Assistant Professor Ambara R. Pradipta, and Satria Zulkarnaen Bisri, also a RIKEN researcher and a visiting associate professor at Tokyo Tech.

In the lecture session that followed, TICA 2019 hosted two Indonesian keynote speakers who are spearheading the development of science and technology. These included Ricky Elson, electric car developer and founder of Lentera Bumi Nusantara, a holding company active in the fields of technology and community development, and Dionysius Siringoringo, associate professor at Yokohama National University.

The TICA event has transformed into a major event in the past 10 years, as evidenced by support from various parties including Tokyo Tech, the Indonesian embassy, and the various other sponsors who took part. The Tokyo Tech Indonesian Student Association will continue to hold TICA in support of the development of science and technology and young researchers in Indonesia.
