Published: October 27, 2020

It was a long wait due to the effects of COVID-19, but the new students who joined Tokyo Tech in academic year 2020 were finally given a taste of campus life at the end of September. To welcome first-year students and help them familiarize themselves with Ookayama Campus, the Institute's Student Learning Support Section organized a campus quiz tour from September 24 to 30. Of the 1,143 new students who underwent on-campus medical checkups during this period, approximately 500 also joined the quiz tour.

The objective of the tour was to introduce first-year students to key locations on campus through a quick 15-minute tour while testing them with some fun Tokyo Tech-related questions. After completing their checkups, students found the start of the tour at a tent in front of the Health Support Center. They were then asked to visit five on-campus checkpoints — the Library, First Cafeteria, Student Services Department, Collaboration Center for Design and Manufacturing (CODAMA), and Taki Plaza — and answer a question at each checkpoint. All those who completed the tour received original Tokyo Tech goods and a lecture room map created by TAs at the Student Learning Support Section.

Checkpoint 2: First Cafeteria

Traditionally, older students at extracurricular clubs organize a grand welcome for new students at Tokyo Tech. This was not possible during COVID-19, so instead, they made all new student welcome events and extracurricular club activities available online. Pamphlets regarding these activities were also accessible at the First Cafeteria.

Checkpoint 3: Student Division & Student Support Division

Due to social distancing, many students participated alone in the quiz tour.

Special team to support new students during COVID-19 era

The Ookayama Campus quiz tour was planned and conducted by the Student Support Center's Student Learning Support Section, a critical part of a special team put together specifically to support new bachelor-program students during the COVID-19 era. This team — made of some 30 faculty and staff members — aims to ensure that first-year students, many of whom completed the first six months of their Tokyo Tech life without stepping foot on campus, stay focused, positive, and motivated in their studies despite the unusual circumstances. Between April and mid-July 2020, the team responded to over 2,600 emails sent in by first-year students.
