The Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (ToTAL)outer has welcomed its third cohort, nine new graduate students who joined the program in December 2020. A registration ceremony and orientation for the new students were held on December 2. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the event was held online.

Established in April 2018, ToTAL offers a five-year extracurricular program for graduate students. The academy's mission is to provide leadership excellence education to empower students in the science and technology fields, to develop core expertise and leadership skills that bring out the best in each individual, and to encourage students to become innovative global citizens in a rapidly-changing era.

During the registration ceremony for the new students, Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu explained that the ToTAL program is based on the successful elements of the Program for Leading Graduate Schools, and is organized in collaboration with the Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA). Masu also highlighted the importance of student-centered learning within the ToTAL program, an approach that is expected of Designated National Universities such as Tokyo Tech. "I hope you remain proactive, absorb as much as you can, and nurture the leadership skills attainable through this cutting-edge curriculum," the president commented.

Following the president's remarks, Executive Vice President for Education Tetsuya Mizumoto and Executive Vice President for Institute Strategy Isao Satoh gave a welcoming speech. Vice President for Teaching and Learning Jun-ichi Imura, the director of ToTAL, also introduced each program faculty member individually. To conclude the ceremony, each student gave a self-introductory speech about their research and goals while at ToTAL.

During the orientation session held before the registration ceremony, faculty members explained the offerings of the ToTAL program, including the curriculum — cultural skills, recognition of social issues, global communication, leadership, followership, and consensus building, and the final off-campus project — to the students.
