Tokyo Tech's three engineering schools renew student exchange agreement with MIT's Department of Nuclear Science & Engineering

Tokyo Tech's three engineering schools — the School of Engineering, the School of Materials and Chemical Technology, and the School of Environment and Society — renewed their ongoing student exchange agreement with the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on March 1, 2021.

The exchange program, based on the departmental agreement concluded in February 2017 between the MIT Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (CANES) and the Laboratory for Advanced Nuclear Energy (LANE) at Tokyo Tech's Institute of Innovative Research, focuses broadly on nuclear energy systems, and specifically aims to cultivate meaningful exchanges among researchers and students.

Based on successful past exchanges, an undergraduate student exchange program with a credit transfer system was launched in July 2019 between Tokyo Tech's three engineering schools and NSE. The first batch of students successfully completed the five-month curriculum in January 2020. In February 2020, Tokyo Tech Executive Vice President for Education Tetsuya Mizumoto and MIT Vice Chancellor Ian Waitz met in Massachusetts and agreed to continue the exchange, confirming mutual interest and benefits for both institutions. The renewed agreement stipulates student exchange for the next five academic years, from 2021-22 to 2025-26. The previous agreement was a two-year pilot program.

The renewed agreement with NSE highlights the high international standards of and continued student interest in the education offered by Tokyo Tech. Despite suspension of the second-term student exchange in academic year 2020-21 due to the spread of COVID-19, the renewal is expected to accelerate further mutual exchange between the two institutions.
