Generative artificial intelligence (“GenAI”), among which most notably is ChatGPT, is being used to write reports and assignments and has thus become a worldwide issue. We expect all students to exercise good sense and judgement when using GenAI, in accordance with the Institute’s spirit of “Student-Centered Learning”. Points to note when using GenAI and assessment criteria and methods have been shared with teaching staff in mid-March. We have reorganized the information and the discussion that follows to show the Institute’s guidelines and precautions with regard to the use of GenAI for all students.

Institute Guidelines

1.
As there are both risks and advantages to using GenAI as a tool, the Institute will not propose a total ban on its use at this point. We trust the independence of the students and expect the best use of such systems based on good sense and ethical standards. Submitting reports that rely almost entirely on the output of GenAI is highly improper and its continued use is equivalent to one’s enslavement to the technology.
2.
The degree to which the use of GenAI is permitted (including whether or not to ban its use) depends on the objectives and content of the course and the teaching and assessment criteria and methods of course instructors, etc. Some courses may prohibit its use for report writing or programming, while others may encourage its use for proofreading or generating reference programs. Please follow the instructions of course instructors, as the details may not be specified in the syllabi.

General Precautions

1.
Do not enter any personal or security related information or the like as it may be leaked unintentionally if entered in to a GenAI system.
2.
Responses produced by GenAI have been processed from big data based on Natural Language Processing technology. Therefore, it may generate inappropriate answers and even incorrect or harmful answers in some cases.
3.
GenAI can be used as an information source just as search engines. However, you need to find evidence from reliable sources for accurate information on particular areas of specialization.
4.
Creators of written assignments shall take full responsibility for any text/content from GenAI, even if it is only partially used.
